1865 Freed Slave with Union Soldiers
1865 Freed Slave with Union Soldiers
This photograph shows General Napoleon B. McLaughlin standing with four other soldiers seated in front of tent, and black man seated on ground with small dog. July 1865.

This is a very unique and compelling photograph The Black man is seated on the ground, showing a definite class distinction between him and the officers, and yet they wanted him in the photograph--a rare luxury in 1865. Why? Did he represent a trophy of sorts as an ex-slave, or was he a trusted aide? Also, there is this curious pose--he is seated like a child with his puppy. This seems to fit the stereotype of the time of the "child-like negro." Was he posed this way, or had he adopted the demeanor that was expected of him?
