This is an extraordinarily detailed French nautical map of the Atlantic Ocean between Brazil and Africa, 1737. This map is essentially showing the circular trade route (circular wind pattern) that allowed sailing ships to pick-up slaves in Africa, deliver them to Brazil and then pick-up sugar to deliver in Europe. Brazil had the largest slave population in the New World.

This photograph shows Hon. Josiah Thomas Walls of Florida, 1870. Josiah Walls was born a slave near Winchester, Virginia. He was forced to join the Confederate Army and was captured by the Union Army in 1862 at Yorktown. He voluntarily joined the United States Colored Troops in 1863 and rose to the rank of corporal. He was discharged in Florida and settled in Alachua County.
